New Farmer to Farmer Program (2018-2023)
Partners of the Americas Inc. is rolling out a new Farmer to Farmer Program (F2F) in Guyana (2018-2023).
The Guyana Chapter will be assisting HQ to implement this program. The overall objective of the Guyana Horticulture Production and Marketing Project (HPM) is to increase the productivity and profitability of select horticulture sub-sectors. Specific objectives for HPM include increasing the production of high-value, nontraditional crops with improved product quality; increasing the organizational and management capacity of participating producers and producer groups; increasing income for small and medium producers and businesses; increasing sales of fresh and processed high value, nontraditional crops in local and national markets; laying the foundation for future participation in export markets.
Use of Drones in Agriculture
The Guyana Chapter has been in existence for 30 years. Over the years Partners has worked with numerous individual value chain participants, producer groups, associations and cooperatives in various Regions throughout Guyana. Partners has over the years worked on projects in diverse areas including health, climate change and environmental protection, agriculture, women and gender equality and education but the main area has been agriculture.
Partners is best known in Guyana in supporting government programs through the input of technical experts under the Farmer to Farmer program and in recent years as a promoter of container and shadehouse vegetable production (hydroponics and natural / organic). However, we have just embarked on a new initiative – the promotion of the use of drones in the agricultural sector. Towards this end, Partners is collaborating with a drone service provider to make these services available to the sector. We believe that the agricultural sector could benefit from all aspects of accurate and timely monitoring of the status of field activities from land preparation to harvesting; inclusive of aspects such as the impact of rainfall, droughts and disease on a growing crop. Drones can also be used in areas such as: mapping / surveying, irrigation management and livestock monitoring.
Partners had been looking for another growth point and eventually stumbled on this area. We have chosen to partner with a young team led by the Mr. Julian Cadogan, Principal of Caliper Drone Services. Partners and Caliper have already made presentations to GLDA, GRDB, NAREI, IICA , Bureau of Statistics and FAO all of which have been well received. The first set of in-field activities has started with GLDA at Ebini, Berbice River.
Ministry of Natural Resources / Partners of the Americas (Guyana) Collaboration
The Board of Directors of the organization decided to become involved in the area of natural resources by helping to share information on Guyana’s vast natural resources to our children. Because our office is located in the Belair / North Sophia area, we proposed to start with the schools in this general area and towards this end we reached out to Belair Primary School to be the first beneficiary school – beginning in 2018. Our vision is to expand the program in 2019. Partners solicited the support of the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) to provide the expertise to the required information and they responded positively. The activity was conducted on January 24, 2019 and 60 Grades 5 and 6 students benefited from the interaction. It was well received.
Ministry of Public Health / Partners of the Americas (Guyana) Collaboration
With support from the Ministry of Public Health, Partners hosted a Medical Outreach Program at its HQ building on December 8, 2018. The Ministry provided expertise in the areas of: Cancer, diabetes, heart ailments and arthritis as well as diet and nutrition. We anticipate that in 2019 we would like to continue to collaborate with MPH in areas such as: dental services, ophthalmology services, HIV, mental health and chronic diseases.
